Designation

Ammonite Fossil

Description

This specimen is a fossilized ammonite shell, belonging to the extinct subclass Ammonoidea. The fossil displays a planispiral coiling pattern. On the primary side, the external shell surface is visible, showing intricate suture lines where the internal septa met the outer shell wall. These suture patterns are complex, which is typical for members of the order Ammonitida. The shell surface exhibits a dark brown to black coloration with distinct metallic, bronze-like patches, suggesting mineralization such as pyritization or replacement by iron-rich minerals. The reverse side of the fossil has been mechanically cut and polished flat, revealing a cross-section of the internal chambers (camerae). This polished surface shows a light tan to grey sedimentary matrix with darker mineralized speckling. The specimen is largely intact, with its preparation designed to show both the external morphology and internal composition.
