Trilobite fossil (Flexicalymene)
This specimen is a fossilized trilobite, an extinct marine arthropod. Based on the morphological features, it belongs to the genus Flexicalymene, likely from the Ordovician period. The specimen displays a distinct three-lobed structure consisting of a cephalon (head), a multi-segmented thorax, and a pygidium (tail). The cephalon shows a prominent, lobed glabella and well-defined facial sutures. The thorax consists of numerous pleurae that exhibit a characteristic downward curvature. The overall color is a matte, earthy brown to grey, suggesting a silicified or calcified replacement in a fine-grained sedimentary matrix. The specimen is preserved in a slightly enrolled or curved posture, which was a common defensive mechanism for these organisms. Surface details include visible segments and the rounded contours of the exoskeleton. Some structural cracks are present across the cephalon and thoracic segments, which have been stabilized or remain as part of the natural fossilization process. The preparation appears to be mechanical, having removed the majority of the surrounding matrix to reveal the dorsal anatomy of the trilobite. No significant restoration is immediately apparent, though the surface shows signs of natural weathering.
