Designation

Fossilized Fish Pair (Knightia eocaena)

Description

This specimen features two fossilized specimens of the extinct herring-like fish Knightia eocaena, preserved within a light-colored limestone matrix. The two fish are oriented in the same direction, with the upper specimen partially overlapping the lower one. The preservation exhibits a dark brown coloration of the skeletal elements against the pale rock, highlighting the vertebral column, ribs, and delicate fin structures. The skulls are visible in profile, showing characteristic features of the genus. The surrounding matrix shows evidence of mechanical preparation, with visible tool marks forming a border around the fossils to enhance their visibility. The slab itself has an irregular, natural shape with rough edges. This type of fossil is characteristic of the Green River Formation, known for its exceptional preservation of Eocene lake fauna. The scales and fine bone structures are well-defined under close inspection, though some parts of the fins are less distinct due to the nature of the fossilization process.
