Petrified Wood

Description

This specimen consists of a mineralized fragment of ancient wood, demonstrating the process of permineralization where organic matter has been replaced by silica while preserving original anatomical structures. One primary face shows a distinct longitudinal grain with vertical striations typical of woody plant tissue. The color palette is diverse, featuring a base of cool greys and charcoals within the mineralized core, contrasted by vibrant ochre, rust-orange, and earthy brown staining on the exterior and along fracture planes, likely indicating the presence of iron oxides. The outer 'bark' surface is characterized by a rough, ridged texture and a lighter, beige-to-tan coloration. The specimen is blocky and irregular in shape, representing a robust fragment of a larger trunk or branch. There are no signs of artificial polishing or industrial preparation; the piece retains its natural, raw state with sharp-edged fractures and weathered surfaces. The internal structure appears dense and lacks visible porosity, suggesting complete silicification, typical of chalcedony or opal replacement.
