Designation

Trochactaeon fossil cross-section

Description

This specimen is a fossilized gastropod of the genus Trochactaeon, originating from the Gosau Group in Russbach, Austria. One side of the specimen has been polished to reveal a clear transverse cross-section of the internal spiral structure (whorls). The shell material appears as light cream to tan calcified lines, while the internal chambers are filled with a dark gray to black, fine-grained sedimentary matrix. This contrast highlights the logarithmic growth pattern of the snail. The reverse side, shown in the second image, remains unpolished and displays a rough, weathered surface with irregular shell fragments and matrix. The overall shape of the piece is discoidal due to the sectioning, though the original shell would have been globose or conical.
