Ammonite Fossil in Red Limestone Matrix
This paleontological specimen features two distinct ammonite fossils embedded within a dense, red limestone matrix. The stone exhibits a deep reddish-brown color, characteristic of iron-rich sedimentary environments. One ammonite is visible as a complete transverse cross-section, showing a tightly coiled spiral with white calcitic infilling. The second, larger fossil is positioned at the base of the slab, displaying a more complex internal structure of septa and chambers. These chambers are partially filled with crystalline minerals, creating a sharp visual contrast against the dark matrix. The specimen has been prepared as a slab with a high-gloss polished front surface that enhances the visibility of the internal fossil structures. The reverse and edges of the piece appear to be roughly cut or naturally fractured, showing the raw texture of the limestone. Small, scattered white circular features across the matrix likely represent additional micro-fossils or shell fragments, indicating a rich fossiliferous horizon. The overall composition is typical of the 'Rosso Ammonitico' facies, a well-known pelagic limestone from the Tethyan region.
