Designation

Belemnite rostrum

Description

This specimen is a fossilized belemnite rostrum, representing the internal skeletal element of an extinct marine cephalopod. The object is broken into two pieces: a larger cylindrical section and a smaller, tapered apical fragment. The fossil is composed of calcite, exhibiting a brownish-grey, slightly translucent appearance. The anterior end features a visible opening for the alveolus, the conical cavity that originally contained the phragmocone. In cross-section, the specimen shows a radial structure typical of belemnoid growth. The exterior surface is relatively smooth but exhibits minor pitting and dark mineral staining. The specimen has been completely removed from its original rock matrix, allowing for a full examination of its form and internal structure at the break points.
