Fossil fish (Vinctifer sp.)

Fossil fish (Vinctifer sp.) in nodule
This specimen is a fossilized ray-finned fish belonging to the genus Vinctifer, preserved within a characteristic calcareous nodule. The fossil exhibits an elongated, cylindrical body typical of the Aspidorhynchidae family. A significant portion of the fish is exposed through mechanical preparation, revealing exceptionally well-preserved, articulated rhomboid (ganoid) scales. These scales show a dark brown to black mineralization, creating a sharp contrast against the light-tan to greyish-brown sedimentary matrix. The head region is visible, showing a partially preserved elongated snout or rostrum. The preservation is three-dimensional, which is a hallmark of fossils from the Araripe Basin. The nodule itself is elongated and slightly curved, following the general morphology of the fish. While the mid-section and head are well-defined, the caudal (tail) fin appears to be missing or remains encased within the matrix. The surface of the matrix shows some darker spotting and a rough, natural texture.
