Polished Trochactaeon Fossil Slab
This specimen is a fossiliferous sedimentary rock slab featuring a high concentration of gastropods from the genus Trochactaeon. The object has undergone preparation where one primary surface has been cut flat and polished to a smooth finish. This process reveals the internal morphology of the gastropod shells in various cross-sectional planes, including longitudinal and transverse views. The shell material has been replaced by minerals, resulting in distinct white and cream-colored calcitic structures that contrast sharply against the dark grey to black fine-grained matrix. The internal spiral whorls and the characteristic thick shell walls of the Trochactaeon are clearly visible. The reverse side of the specimen is left in its natural, unprepared state, exhibiting a rugged, uneven texture with a brownish-grey coloration. This side shows the weathered exterior of the matrix and hints of further fossil inclusions. The specimen demonstrates the typical appearance of a shell bed accumulation, where the density of the fossils suggests a high-energy paleoenvironment.
